Student Visa to Canada

Visa and Student Authorization Procedure
Submit the completed application kit to the immigration section of the Canadian High commission. Please note that all the documents submitted, must be either original or photocopies notarized and witnessed by a notary public or a magistrate or the Canadian Immigration Officer, and be accompanied by a duplicate copy.

Documents required

  • Completed Student Application form.
  • Completed Supplementary Questionnaire for students and postdoctoral researchers.
  • Official letter of acceptance from Canadian university, college or Technical Institute.
  • Certificate of Acceptance from the province of Quebec (Only if you plan to study in province of Quebec)
  • TOEFL/IELTS scores if applicable
  • Passport, valid for at least one year from the planned date of entry to Canada, plus valid passports of any accompanying dependants.
  • Bank Draft for the applicable visa processing fees

Proof of Funds

Every applicant must demonstrate that they have sufficient financial resources available to them to pay tuition fees, maintain him/herself and dependants who go to Canada, and to pay return transportation costs without engaging in employment in Canada. For example, students without accompanying dependants must demonstrate that they have at least $10,000 Cdn plus the cost of tuition for a twelve-month period, plus the cost of transportation to and fro from Canada. Canadian $10,000 is the base amount considered adequate to cover all costs, other than tuition, for one person for a twelve-month period. Some educational institutions require that more funds be available; if the local cost of living is higher than average, more money may also be required.

After the Completed application forms along with the documents are submitted;

INTERVIEW -  An interview with a Canadian Visa Officer may be required. If this is the case, you will be advised in writing of the time and place for the interview.

MEDICAL EXAMINATION -  The Canadian high commission will issue medical instructions. Students and accompanying dependants must pass a medical examination.

If the student and accompanying dependants are found to be in good health and there are no other concerns with the application, the Visa and Student Authorization will be issued.

You must have been accepted by a school, college, university or other educational institution in Canada.
You must prove that you have enough money to pay for your:  tuition fees  living expenses for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada and  return transportation for yourself and any family members who come with you to Canada.

You must be a law-abiding citizen with no criminal record and not be a risk to the security of Canada. You may have to provide a police certificate.
You must be in good health and willing to complete a medical examination, if necessary.
You must satisfy an immigration officer that you will leave Canada when you have completed your studies.

The status of your application

The processing times depend on the Canadian visa office where you have submitted your application. Your application will be reviewed by the visa office. Thus, the student should ensure that he/she has completed it correctly and included all the necessary documents. The incomplete applications will not be processed and shall be returned to the student. We provide with a document checklist for the reference of the students. For ore information on all the required documents, visit your nearest Canam office.
The visa office will review your completed application and decide if an interview is necessary. If an interview is necessary, you will be informed of the same by the visa office of the time and place.

In case of address change
If you move or change your address, telephone number or any other contact information after submitting your application, the visa office, where you submitted your application, must be notified of the same.

In case of approval
You will receive the following in case your application is approved:

  • A letter of introduction would be sent to you for your confirmation of approval. Do not assume this letter to be a study permit. This letter of introduction has to be brought along. This has to be shown to the immigration officials at the point of entry, when you arrive in Canada.
  • If you belong to a designated country, for which Canada requires a visa, a temporary resident visa (TRV) will be issued to you. The TRV will be in your passport. The expiry date on the Temporary Resident Visa indicates the date by which you must enter Canada. You must enter Canada before the expiry of your TRV. The TRV also indicates if you can enter Canada only once (a single-entry visa) or if you are permitted to enter Canada multiple times (a multiple-entry visa).

In case your application is rejected

If your application is rejected, you will receive a letter, from the visa office, explaining the reasons of refusal. There are several reasons resulting in a refusal of the application, including:

  • You failed to show proofs of having enough money to support yourself while studying in Canada.
  • You failed to clear the medical examination if it was required.
  • You failed to satisfy the visa officer of your primary intentions in Canada are to study.
  • You failed to satisfy the visa officer that you will leave Canada after

You can contact the visa office, issuing the refusal letter, in case you have questions about your refusal.

When Should I Arrive?

We recommend you to arrive about two weeks before classes begin in Canada, for completing the registration procedures. If you plan to look out for off-campus accommodations, we would advice you to arrive 2 weeks to a month before classes begin for arranging non-University housing. You will also be required reserving an absolute minimum of 1 week of temporary accommodation in advance of your arrival. This is done to enable you having a place to stay, while you arrange your permanent housing.
Your arriving early in Canada will offer an added advantage. You will get to know your way around the campus, the city, and be able to find suitable off-campus housing, if needed. There is a variety of accommodation options to choose from. Also, you will get a chance to participate in planned social events, make friends, and attend orientations.
Note: In case you plan to arrive early, you should make sure you have sufficient money for covering your living costs. The best time to arrive, if your travel arrangements permit, is between 9:00 am and 3:00 pm on weekdays. University offices (including the International Centre) are closed on Saturday, Sunday and holidays, including July 1, August 3 and September 7, 2009. Canadian Universities also remain closed over the winter break (December 25, 2008 to January 1, 2009).
